A Little History
Juneteenth blends "June" and "nineteenth." It marks June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced freedom for enslaved people there — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Today, it is a day of remembrance, gathering, and celebration.
